  2. Place first 4 ingredients in a large bowl. With an electric mixer, beat on low for 20 seconds, then turn up speed to medium and mix for 2 minutes. Stir in chocolate chips and walnuts. Pour batter into loaf pans. Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let cool.
  3. Place candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes or until completely melted. Stir until smooth. Pour into a clear plastic pastry bag. Cut the tip off and drizzle melted candy over the cooled bread. Let the candy melts set (about 20-30 minutes).
  4. For a gift, wrap in clear plastic wrap. Tie a bow around it and add gift tag. Store at room temperature for 24 hours or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Manual VS Electric Toothbrush

If you're like most people, you've probably been curious about whether or not you should use an electric toothbrush or a manual one. Don't worry, you're not alone in this common question.  To most surprise, both of these types of toothbruses actually get the job done just fine. Though, there are perks to each one. Remember, it's not the type of toothbrush that keeps your mouth healthy and smile beautiful, it's the habit of brushing and flossing regularly.

Know the Differences

Manual Toothbrush Benefits:
  • Can help brushers feel they have more control over the brushing process
  • Allow brushers to respond to twinges and reduce the pressure applied to sensitive teeth and gums
  • Are more convenient for packing when traveling
  • Are cheaper and easier to replace than the electric versions

Electric Toothbrush Benefits:
  • Provide power rotation that helps loosen plaque
  • Are great for people with physical limitations
  • Are popular with kids who think the electric brushes are more fun to use
  • Can come with variable speeds to help reduce pressure on sensitive teeth and gums
  • Uses timers to ensure you brush evenly across the four quadrants of your mouth and for the optimal two minutes each session
Both types of toothbrushes have their advantages but both types will get the job done as far as removing plaque.

At Wentz Orthodontics, we like to say the best brush is the one you’ll use. So if you prefer manual, go for it. If you prefer electric, turn it on.

NEW FALL RECIPE: Pumpkin Caramel Poke Cake

Fall is here! With this new season comes fun Halloween festivities, Breast Cancer Awareness, National Orthodontic Health Month, as well as PUMPKIN flavored EVERYTHING! Are you a fan of pumpkin flavor or scent? If you answered no, we're sorry, you probably won't enjoy this blog! If you answered yes, then you're in luck because we've done some research to find you a brand new
spooktacular pumpkin recipe.

PUMPKIN CARAMEL POKE CAKE RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:
  • one 16.50-ounce box spice cake mix
  • one 15-ounce can pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • one 12-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • one 12-ounce jar caramel sundae topping
  • one 8-ounce container whipped topping, thawed
  • 1/2 cup toffee bits
  • 1/2 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup salted caramel sauce (storebought or homemade, regular caramel sauce or caramel sundae topping may be substituted)
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Line a 9x13-inch pan with aluminum foil and spray with cooking spray; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add the cake mix, pumpkin puree, egg, oil, pumpkin pie spice, and beat with a handheld electric mixer on high until smooth and combined, about 3 minutes, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as necessary.
  3. Bake for about 27 to 30 minutes, or until cake is set in the center, springy to the touch, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs but no batter.
  4. While the cake bakes combine the sweetened condensed milk, caramel sundae topping, and whisk to combine; set aside.
  5. Remove cake from the oven when it's done and use the blunt end of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake.
  6. Slowly pour the sweetened condensed milk and caramel mixture over the cake, taking your time to evenly distribute it. Place cake in the fridge for about 15 minutes to cool slightly before adding the whipped topping so it doesn't melt.
  7. Remove cake from the fridge, evenly spread the whipped topping over the surface, evenly sprinkle with toffee bits, chocolate chips, and evenly drizzle with salted caramel sauce. Cover cake and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (overnight is best) before slicing and serving.

Stay Flossy

Wentz Orthodontics understands it may be difficult to figure out how to floss when you have braces. With those wires, brackets, bands, and appliances getting in the way, going from no braces, to a mouth full of appliances can be a little overwhelming. It is important that you don’t neglect flossing in order to keep your gums and teeth healthy. Flossing is extremely important while you’re a patient at Wentz Orthodontics being treated for braces because it can be easy for food particles to become trapped in your teeth. Trapped food particles can lead to cavities and gum disease; something we definitely want you to avoid. Flossing regularly while wearing braces will keep your mouth healthy and your smile will look amazing when your braces are removed.

If you are new to flossing with braces we’ve gathered some tips and tricks you can use to help you conquer this task.
  • Carefully Thread the Floss: You should thread the floss under the wire before passing it between your teeth with a floss threader.
  • Use a Proxy Brush: There is a special type of brush you can use called a proxy brush that can assist you trapped food particles. The bristles on this brush are great for getting under the wire and between your teeth.
  • Use a Water Flosser: Another great tool for flossing with braces is a water flosser. These flossers can be fixed with a special orthodontic tip on them that is designed to remove food particles and bacteria from your braces and between your teeth. Using a water flosser is much easier than threading the floss between each bracket.
  • Use Waxed Floss: Waxed flosses are less likely to get caught in your braces or tear when they come into contact with the metal braces.
If you are a difficult time flossing with your braces, or if you would like more tips on how to successfully care for your teeth, our friendly team at Wentz Orthodontics is happy to help.

Types of Braces at Wentz Orthodontics

The advancements in the field of orthodontics now offer many options if you want to achieve a perfect smile. Included in the different options are the various treatment costs where you can choose amongst several price ranges to determine the best option for your budget. Nowadays, there are no more limitations when you want to achieve a healthy and beautiful smile that will last for many years especially when teeth are properly cared for.

At Wentz Orthodontics, we allow our patients to choose their look. From traditional silver braces to ceramic, lingual, and Invisalign; patients need not look further for an orthodontist once they visit Wentz Orthodontics.

What is Traditional Silver?
Typically made of high-grade stainless steel, traditional metal braces remain by far the most common type of fixed orthodontic appliances. They consist of metal bands that wrap around the molars in back, and smaller metal brackets that are cemented to the front surfaces of the other teeth. A thin, springy metal wire, running through the brackets, gently guides the teeth into a proper position. This archwire may be fixed to the brackets by flexible elastics, metal ties, or other types of clasps.

What is Ceramic?
Ceramic braces are a new variation on the traditional system that provides a far less noticeable method of treatment. They use the same components as traditional braces — except that the brackets on the front side of the teeth are made of a translucent ceramic material that blends in with the tooth's natural color. This system has become a favorite for adults (including some well-known celebrities) because, unless you look closely, it's hard to notice they're there.

What is Lingual?
While ceramic braces certainly offer a less conspicuous look, there is still another system that allows fixed braces to be truly invisible. In some situations, special appliances called lingual braces can be placed on the tongue side of the teeth. They work the same way other metal braces do — but even though they're made of metal, they can't be seen, because they're hidden behind the teeth themselves!

What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing. So you can smile during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology and been proven effective.

Why You NEED To Wear Your Retainers

The big day has finally arrived! It’s braces removal day. You say goodbye to those braces you've been sporting and flashy that super straight smile out the door...only to return later to have your removable retainer fitted…what?

You see when you reach the end of your braces journey your teeth have been subtly shifting over the final few months into their delightfully perfected resting place. However, you should know that it takes many months to complete stabilization of positioning of teeth, which is why it is important to wear your retainers after your braces are removed!

We know that it is not the news you want to hear after your newfound freedom. But don't worry, you'll get used to it!

Trust us, as you've been doing so far, you wouldn’t want to invest all that time and money only to not wear your retainers and risk some of your teeth relapsing to their former incorrect resting place would you?

Let those lovely osteoblasts and osteoclasts do their job and give them all the support you can, and you will enjoy your gorgeous new smile for life!

What to Ask at Your Orthodontic Consultation

When you first start thinking about going to the orthodontist, it is normal to feel apprehensive. What will your orthodontic experience bring? Whether you have been advised by a dentist or chosen to seek out orthodontic care from Dr. Wentz on your own, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your initial consultation at Wentz Orthodontics.

One of the best ways to prepare for an orthodontic consultation is to understand your options. With so many choices available today, orthodontic care is a lot more versatile than in the past. You can start preparing now by seeking out and understanding those options. With a few specific things in mind, you can be totally confident and prepared for your consultation.

Questions To Ask During the Consultation
As you consider orthodontic care, it is likely that a few questions may naturally arise. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions you might have. Our orthodontic team is here to help. Here are just a few examples of questions you may want to ask at your consultation.
  • Is there an estimated length of time that I will likely require braces?
  • How much should I expect to pay for my treatment? What are the payment options?
  • Does getting braces hurt? Is there anything I can do to prevent or minimize pain?
  • Is it likely that I will be wearing extra appliances in addition to braces to correct my overbite or other problems?
  • Are there specific foods I will need to avoid when I get braces?
  • Will braces prevent me from playing my favorite sport or musical instrument?
  • How can I keep my teeth clean with braces?
  • How often will I be expected to come in for checkups and other appointments?
Once your consultation is over, you don’t have to feel like your options are exhausted. If questions arise after the consultation, don’t be afraid to ask. Our orthodontic team will be here to help throughout the entire process.

Confidence throughout the Process

With answers to your questions, and an orthodontic team on your side, you can be confident about any necessary orthodontic treatments. From the initial consultation to the day your braces come off, your orthodontic treatment at Wentz Orthodontics can be a smooth and simple process. The moment you see that beautiful smile, you’ll know it was all worth it.

What is Crowding?

What happens when there is an issue with space in each jaw and the size of the teeth? Crowding.

Crowding of the teeth is one of the most common orthodontic problems. Dental crowding occurs when there is not enough space to fit teeth within the jaws. There are other factors that can contribute, but this problem typically stems from a discrepancy between the space in each jaw and the size of teeth.
Crowding is often one of several orthodontic problems. When crowding occurs teeth may be overlapping and displaced, which can cause a number of functional and cosmetic issues. Crowding can be the cause or result of other problems, such as impacted teeth, retained teeth or teeth that do not naturally fall out. Crossbite of the front or rear teeth can also cause the teeth to become crowded.
Depending on the severity of the crowding determines which treatment option is best for you. Some cases call for extractions or surgery, but the most common treatment for crowding is braces. If you are experiencing crowding schedule a consultation today and Wentz Orthodontics can determine what treatment is best for you!

A Few Things To Remember During The Years Of Retainer Wear

Our goal at Wentz Orthodontics is to help your smile stay beautiful and healthy for a lifetime. Your cooperation is essential in order to achieve this goal.

Here Are A Few Things To Remember During The Years Of Retainer Wear

1. Wear your retainers as prescribed by Dr. Wentz.

2. The safest place for your retainer is in your mouth. When retainers are not in your mouth, ALWAYS keep them in your retainer case.

3. Do not wrap retainers in a paper towel or napkin, this is the easiest way to lose them.

4. Do not place loose retainers in your pocket, this is the easiest way to break them.

5. Keep retainers away from pets — dogs LOVE them.

6. Clean your retainers by brushing them with toothpaste and water or with antibacterial soap. NEVER soak your retainers, this causes them to rust and/or break. Be sure to brush your teeth without your retainers in. Do not boil your retainer or put it in hot water.

7. Do not place retainers in the dishwasher, microwave or in boiling water — they will melt or warp.

8. Your lower retainer may be a fixed retainer bonded onto your teeth. It is not considered permanent and can be broken or detached from your teeth, if you are not careful with it.

9. Bring your retainers to your check-up appointment. If anything happens to your retainers (i.e. it doesn't fit, it's broken, or it's lost) please call us ASAP. If your lower bonded retainer wire comes out, keep it and bring it in at your next appointment for rebonding.

10. The first set of retainers is included in your treatment fee. Any repair, replacement of your retainer, or rebonding of your lower retainer will be additional and charged to your account.

The benefits of orthodontic treatment will last a lifetime if you keep these important patient responsibilities in mind. If you have any further questions regarding retention contact Wentz Orthodontics at your earliest convenience.

Can My Pre-Teen Wear Invisalign?

There is no “yes-or-no” answer. The decision, ultimately, will be made by the patient’s parents and their orthodontist. As long as your pre-teen has a fully developed set of teeth, Invisalign can be used in treatment. Invisalign clear aligners are generally safe for developing pre-teens, and the resulting tooth placement lasts a very long time. A consultation with Dr. Wentz and the team at Wentz Orthodontics can help you determine the best course of orthodontic treatment for your child in or surrounding Lubbock, Texas.

Imagine being treated with a set of braces that are virtually undetectable.
That’s the beauty of Invisalign clear aligners. Invisalign costs around the same as treatment with traditional braces, but is more discreet, more comfortable, and more easily worn than metal braces. Being treated with Invisalign in Lubbock, TX by Dr. Wentz of Wentz Orthodontics can correct a patient’s orthodontic issues without anyone ever noticing that they are wearing braces.

Invisalign instead of metal braces.
Image and self-esteem are critical personal issues for developing children, teens, and adults with a less-than-perfect smile. Dr. Wentz says that the real appeal of Invisalign clear aligners is the freedom to eat and drink whatever you want without worrying about damaging your dental work. Invisalign clear aligners are removable by the wearer, making cleaning, eating, and active pursuits more comfortable.

Follow the instructions.
Pre-teens being treated with Invisalign risk interrupting the progress of their treatment by forgetting to wear the appliance. An Invisalign patient is afforded the opportunity to remove the trays before eating, and a pre-teen patient may forget to replace them in their mouth afterwards.

Assuming your pre-teen is qualified for treatment with Invisalign, make sure too that they understand how to wear, clean, and store the Invisalign trays. For some pre-teens, it is easy to follow instructions at home, but in school your child may forget some of the responsibilities that come with being treated with Invisalign. With conscientious care and application, your pre-teen’s treatment with Invisalign will ensure a great set of healthy, straight teeth that will serve them well for a lifetime.

Invisalign works well for adults and teens, but only a professional like Wentz Orthodontics can help decide if Invisalign treatment in Lubbock, Texas is the correct course of action to take in regard to your child’s orthodontic care. To learn more about treatment with Invisalign, or to schedule an appointment with Wentz Orthodontics call us at: (806)79-BRACE.

Invisalign at Wentz Orthodontics

Wentz Orthodontics was the first Elite Preferred Provider in West Texas, meaning that we are in the top 1% in the nation for providing Invisalign treatment.

Not only are Invisalign aligners virtually invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also more comfortable than traditional braces, with no metal or wires, which also usually means you spend less time in your doctor's office getting adjustments. Invisalign treatment also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan when you start so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete.

How does it work?
You wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to their final positions. You'll visit us about once every six weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages nine to 15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

For more information on Invisalign, you can visit the Wentz Orthodontics website and click the Invisalign tab.

Make Your "Something New" An Invisalign Smile!

It's wedding season! There are several things that go into planning a wedding from the venue, to the dress, to the photos and bridal party. As some see weddings as an end to an era, weddings are really a celebration of new opportunities and new beginnings. A lot of people start new goals when they become engaged, starting a new workout regimen, changing hairstyles, or getting the brightest whitest and straightest smile they’ve always wanted. If you want to have your best smile on your big day, don’t panic about a metal smile or longevity of treatment because we have a program that can help you achieve just that.

Invisalign, approved by the FDA in 1998, has been a wonderful non-invasive alternative to classic braces for almost 20 years. Not only has it changed smiles, but Invisalign has changed the look of classic braces using state-of-the art technology; no cement or metal used.  Wentz Orthodontics utilizes the Invisalign system providing a series of BPA-free plastic trays that realign your teeth. Patients wear these trays for 20-22 hours a day, and two weeks at a time. They’re easy to remove making it easy for brushing, eating, drinking, and oral care. As the trays are clear, they appear to be invisible which makes it even better for those who may be self-conscious about getting braces in adulthood.

Patients can start to see results fast with Invisalign, usually within a couple of months after beginning a personalized treatment; and in most cases treatment is completed within 1 year. This is a great treatment for those of you who are ready to say “I Do."  Invisalign can produce results in weeks, and still give you a clear smile while taking engagement pictures and celebrating before you walk down the aisle.

If you are ready to get your best smile for your big day, give us a call and we can set up your first visit to get started.

Why You Should Wear Mouth Guards & Helmets

Since April is National Facial Protection Month, we at Wentz Orthodontics have decided to share some important statistics to keep in mind as spring sports season begins. It’s important for parents and coaches to remind athletes and recreational sports players to wear mouth guards to protect their teeth and jaw, and helmets to protect their faces and heads. These 2 simple pieces of equipment are far too often overlooked, as most are unaware that they are essential athletic gear that can help prevent serious, painful injuries that affect the face and mouth.

Keep reading to learn a few statistics to remember this spring sports season.
3: Types of mouth guards: Custom-fitted mouth guards are made by your dentist for you personally. Stock mouth guards come pre-formed and may offer a bulky fit. Boil and bite mouth guards are softened in boiling water and then inserted and allowed to adapt to the shape of your mouth.

5: The number of top dental associations that encourage athletes and recreational sports players to wear mouth guards to keep their teeth and smiles intact.

7 to 11: The ages during which children are most vulnerable to sports-related mouth injuries.

60: The number of times that athletes are more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they're not wearing a mouth guard.

All: How many sports during which you should wear a mouth guard. Collision and contact sports may be high-risk for the mouth, but you can still experience a dental injury from other sports such as gymnastics or skating.

We hope you have found these tips to be helpful. Be sure to use them to prevent injuries that can be costly to your health and your wallet.

Look Younger With Orthodontic Treatment

Did you know braces aren’t just for straightening teeth? Most people don’t know this, but braces can actually improve the shape and structure of your entire face. This can take years off of your appearance and is a great alternative to cosmetic surgery. A lot of adults are starting to utilize orthodontics for altering their facial structure, or simply to help reduce wrinkles, as it is less invasive and more affordable.

Facial tissues and bone structures determine the shape of our faces, this includes your teeth. As the facial tissue loses elasticity throughout the years, and teeth sink in towards the tongue naturally, orthodontic treatment can help reverse these natural gravity changes. When teeth start to lean in, orthodontists can use braces to help correct alignment and provide support for the lips. Ultimately, this can eliminate the fine lines around the mouth, depending on the treatment.

Obviously, the more orthodontic treatment you have done, the more visible and dramatic effect your appearance will have. Simple, regular procedures such as straightening a few teeth will not result in the same effect as those who have more extensive work done. Basic treatments too, can greatly impact your appearance. Whitening and rebuilding worn teeth can give you a big leap in your overall appearance and are less drastic.

Remember, when you feel good you smile more, and when you smile more you look younger. Contact Wentz Orthodontics for more information or to get your orthodontic treatment started.

National Anthem Day

Today is National Anthem Day! On March 3rd, we celebrate and honor the national anthem of the United States of America, our wonderful anthem known as The Star Spangled Banner. The Star Spangled Banner was written by Fancis Scott Key while serving in the Georgetown Light Field Artillery during the War of 1812. It wasn’t until March 3rd, 1931 that The Star Spangled Banner was officially the national anthem of the USA.

To celebrate our great national anthem, we thought it would be fun to share some videos of different famous artists and people singing the National Anthem!

Watch these videos to see some wonderful performances of The Star Spangled Banner!

Do you know 4 or more verses of the song? As a challenge, take some time to sing the National Anthem today and see how many lines you know! Then, try memorizing all of the lyrics! There is a great honor that comes with knowing the words and singing them wholeheartedly.  Wentz Orthodontics recognizes National Anthem Day & we hope you will too!

Celebrate Tooth Fairy Day on February 28th

Did you know that February 28th is National Tooth Fairy Day? Almost all parents tell their children about receiving a visit from the tooth fairy when they start to lose their baby teeth; so having a day to honor this magical fairy shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Tooth Fairy Day gives us a chance to celebrate the generosity of the tooth fairy for leaving treats under our pillows when we lose a tooth. Looking for a way to have some fun with the kiddos? Take time this Sunday to celebrate the tooth fairy!

To help you celebrate, we did a little research to find some random facts about the tooth fairy taken from toothfairyland.com. Check them out below and share them with the kids.

Q: How old are you?
Tooth Fairy Answer:
“I know I look like a child, but I am very very, very, very old. I'm so old, that I stopped counting. I don't really remember when my birthday is. But every year on January 1st, the Tooth Fairy Helpers and I celebrate my birthday. I'm so old that I can remember when people didn't even live in houses.”

Q: How many teeth have you collected?
Tooth Fairy Answer: “Since I collect new teeth every night, the number of teeth in our magical collection at Tooth Fairyland is always growing. I have collected at least 566,884,585,218,216,155,785,335 teeth. That's A LOT OF TEETH!! I hope that your baby teeth are next.”

Q: How do you get my tooth without waking me up?
Tooth Fairy Answer: “Part of being The Tooth Fairy is that I have Tooth Fairy Magic. Using my magic, I can move very quiet and very fast. So quiet and so fast that you don't wake up when I get your tooth...even if it is under your pillow!”

Q: How do you get into my room?
Tooth Fairy Answer: “Using my Tooth Fairy Magic, I can go right into your room, but my magic only works if there is a lost tooth and if you are really sleeping.”

We love being your orthodontic practice, but we also love getting to know more about our patients! Do you have a good tooth fairy memory or traditions? We want to hear all about them! Please leave a comment of post your tooth fairy stores on our Facebook page!

It's National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month! This is the perfect opportunity to teach children the importance of oral health habits and proper techniques of taking care of their teeth, gums, and mouth. Did you know in the United States alone 51 million hours of school is missed by American students due to oral health problems? That’s why it’s so important to emphasize the recognition of this specified national month, because every hour of school that is missed creates more problems for children in the classroom. This is why Wentz Orthodontics encourages you to utilize this month to remind your kids about dental health.

Help your children have knowledge in dental health with these creative ways to make it fun.

Special Toothpaste

Most elementary school aged children aren’t concerned with having minty fresh breath, that’s why the ADA has approved so many fun flavored toothpastes. Almost all kids look forward to cleaning their teeth with fun flavors that fit their taste buds a little better. Some popular flavors are watermelon and strawberry, but there is a great variety to choose from!

Fun Toothbrushes

Another way to make dental health more interesting for children is to opt for fun style toothbrush. When replacing their toothbrush, let them pick one in their favorite color or with their favorite character. Also, a new toothbrush option that is growing pretty rapidly is the gaming toothbrush, such as the Grush. The “Grush” takes brushing to another level. This toothbrush is coupled with interactive and instructive mobile games guiding kids’ through proper brushing techniques while they think they are simply playing a game. These brushes also provide tracking for parents to see growth in results.

Create Memories

Show your children that taking care of their dental health is fun and memorable by adding a little flare to it. Brush and floss with them, sing songs, and help them brush while encouraging them to learn the proper skills. Also, there are several fun books and videos designed specifically for children to learn about dental health. Read to them and watch educational videos together. These efforts alone will provide great oral health habits with your children and long lasting memories.

It's never too late to teach your children proper techniques and skills for their dental health.  Also, don't forget you can bring your child in at age 7 for an evaluation and orthodontic treatment.
