Braces For Kids

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an orthodontic evaluation at the age of 7. This is the recommended age because typically the first of the adult teeth appear, and when some of the more important problems of dental development can require treatment. Treatment for young children is usually aimed at dealing with functional problems that immediately threaten the health of the teeth. The conditions that we treat in early childhood are problems of tooth eruption, crossbite, overcrowding, jaw growth problems, snoring, thumb sucking, tongue thrust and open bite.

Orthodontic issues can develop very early in childhood, which is why early treatment is important for a number of specific conditions to prevent damage to the adult teeth or to limit the effects of a developing growth problem. One of our guiding principles at Wentz Orthodontics is to keep the amount of treatment required to produce a great smile to an absolute minimum. For more information on orthodontic treatment for children, click here to visit our website or give us a call.

Tips For Back To School With Braces

Caring for braces especially for students in school can be quiet hectic due to the restrictive devotions to maintain the braces and for this reason, Wentz Orthodontics has decided to put up an article which will make caring for orthodontic braces easy in school. As a student who just had an orthodontic treatment, you should be rest assured that it is the best that can happen to give you the perfect smile again but the care for your teeth and gums help make it very effective. Take a look at your new braces, you can notice a lot of nooks and crannies that can trap food and plaque and that means a great risk of tooth decay is imminent if not properly cared for, therefore you need to pay special attention to cleaning your teeth. This might look hectic but right here the team of Wentz Orthodontics has few great tips to keep your braces in top condition.

1. WATCH YOUR DIET

As an orthodontic patient with braces, it is very important for you to select your diet with caution. We know that there are several foods in school which tastes great but don't look great in your braces. Certain foods can either break a bracket or some foods are sugary and can have negative effects on the natural ability to brush behind the bracket. Be sure to make decisions on foods based on what is healthy, tasty, and won't harm your brackets.

Food to avoid: As an orthodontic patient we would advise that you desist from:
  • Sticky or gooey foods
  • Hard foods
  • Sugary foods
  • Acidic drinks
2. WEAR A MOUTHGUARD
With braces on your teeth, you might be wondering if you should desist from sports or retire from being the captain of your favorite sports team, but the truth is orthodontics does not affect your ability to play sports. You can keep on with your braces and sports if and only if you have your mouth guard on. Mouth guards are safety measures that can mean the difference between just a bruised, fat lips and thousands spent in orthodontics repair work. While you are in any kind of physical activity (including gym classes), it is advisable that you wear a mouth guard which can protect your teeth and braces from flying sports balls, swinging elbows or an accidental fall or hit.

3. BRUSH AND FLOSS REGULARLY
Braces can easily trap food, and this trapped food can lead to other inimical dental problems. Because of this, it is very important to brush your teeth after every meal and to floss at least once a day.

4. DON'T CHEW ON PENCILS
Pencils, pen, and rulers are all hard objects and most times when you get bored, anxious or plainly destructive you are tempted to chew on them in class. Obviously, this can be destructive in the moment and can be grossly inimical over time. It is important that you don't practice these habits while wearing braces.

We know that maintaining braces in school is can be tough. That is why we ensure to give you the best plans of action to help you out.

For more questions and inquiries that you may have, we are always at your service. You can always contact Wentz Orthodontics.

Does My Child Need Orthodontic Treatment?

It is usually difficult for you as the parent to determine if treatment is necessary because there are many problems that can occur even though the front teeth look straight. Also, there are some problems that look intimidating and complex which will resolve on their own. Asking your general dentist is a good reference, but Wentz Orthodontics is your best resource since orthodontics is all we do.

Early intervention can make a dramatic impact on establishing the proper occlusal foundation. The American Association of Orthodontists, and Dr. Wentz, recommends that all children have a check-up with an orthodontist by the time they reach age 7, for early detection of any potential problems.

By the age 7, some of the permanent teeth have erupted, so that most children have a mix of adult and baby teeth. At this stage of mixed dentition, we can spot potential orthodontic problems related to jaw growth and eruption of adult teeth. Some growth-related orthodontic problems are easier to correct when they are identified early…while the facial bones are still growing.

An early exam allows us to determine how and when a child's particular jaw and/or dental problems should be corrected for the optimal results. Early treatment, or phase one therapy, may be needed to create a better environment to idealize the occlusion for the patient or possibly create an environment to elevate treatment forever. An early orthodontic examination does not always result in immediate treatment. After evaluating your child, we may simply want to monitor your child periodically while the permanent teeth erupt and the jaws and face continue to develop.

Our initial exam is comprehensive and informative, and we would be more than happy to see your child and make any recommendations necessary. Contact Wentz Orthodontics to schedule your child's first visit and let us help them get the smile they deserve.

Celebrate Tooth Fairy Day on February 28th

Did you know that February 28th is National Tooth Fairy Day? Almost all parents tell their children about receiving a visit from the tooth fairy when they start to lose their baby teeth; so having a day to honor this magical fairy shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Tooth Fairy Day gives us a chance to celebrate the generosity of the tooth fairy for leaving treats under our pillows when we lose a tooth. Looking for a way to have some fun with the kiddos? Take time this Sunday to celebrate the tooth fairy!

To help you celebrate, we did a little research to find some random facts about the tooth fairy taken from toothfairyland.com. Check them out below and share them with the kids.

Q: How old are you?
Tooth Fairy Answer:
“I know I look like a child, but I am very very, very, very old. I'm so old, that I stopped counting. I don't really remember when my birthday is. But every year on January 1st, the Tooth Fairy Helpers and I celebrate my birthday. I'm so old that I can remember when people didn't even live in houses.”

Q: How many teeth have you collected?
Tooth Fairy Answer: “Since I collect new teeth every night, the number of teeth in our magical collection at Tooth Fairyland is always growing. I have collected at least 566,884,585,218,216,155,785,335 teeth. That's A LOT OF TEETH!! I hope that your baby teeth are next.”

Q: How do you get my tooth without waking me up?
Tooth Fairy Answer: “Part of being The Tooth Fairy is that I have Tooth Fairy Magic. Using my magic, I can move very quiet and very fast. So quiet and so fast that you don't wake up when I get your tooth...even if it is under your pillow!”

Q: How do you get into my room?
Tooth Fairy Answer: “Using my Tooth Fairy Magic, I can go right into your room, but my magic only works if there is a lost tooth and if you are really sleeping.”

We love being your orthodontic practice, but we also love getting to know more about our patients! Do you have a good tooth fairy memory or traditions? We want to hear all about them! Please leave a comment of post your tooth fairy stores on our Facebook page!

Brace Yourself With This Flossing Tip

We know flossing is not always an easy task when you have braces. The struggle of getting between brackets can be tough not only on your patience but on your oral hygiene if it's not done correctly or regularly. Have you heard of the Waterpik water flosser?  If you're not familiar with this tool, read more and see how it may become your next best friend when you go to floss.

The Waterpik Water Flosser makes flossing with braces easier and more effective, and it comes with an easy to use orthodontic tip.  It has been clinically proven to work better for people with braces as it removes plaque around braces and improvevs gym health more than dental floss.

A lot of our patients have found that when they use a Waterpik they are able to flush out food particles stuck between their teeth. The water from the Waterpik can reach behind the brackets and wires and hit spots where your floss simply cannot reach. People suffering from gum disease also find Waterpik quite effective because of their ability to flush out bacteria from inside the deep pockets.

Watch this video to learn how to use a Waterpik Water Flosser.

If you have any questions about this, or any general questions or concerns about your orthodontic treatment, we encourage you to please ask us at your next appointment at Wentz Orthodontics!

It's Never Too Late

Braces aren't just for kids anymore. Parents are still making regular trips to the orthodontist's office, but these days more are leaving their kids in the waiting room or having treatment at the same time.

More than 1 million grown-ups are sporting some form of braces, double the number from 10 years ago, according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).

Numerous technological advances have made braces less noticeable, less painful and even less time-consuming. As America's baby boomers have become more health conscious, they're rejecting the notion that loosing teeth and dentures are a routine part of growing older.

People are exercising more and eating healthier. Braces are another way of demonstrating that you care about yourself and your overall health. Adults want to maintain their teeth and look better.

It's Never Too Late

Teeth can be straightened at any age. The biological process involved in tooth movement is the same for both children and adults.

Often, adult patients are more appreciative of the many benefits of orthodontic treatment, after having lived with unfavorable smiles and bites for many years.

Wentz Orthodontics works in conjunction with your family dentist. We offer full comprehensive dental care and have the special advantage of having a board certified periodontist working with us.

Be Good To Your Braces & They'll Be Good To You

This summer we’re promoting kindness and as we encourage you to be kind to others we also want you to be kind to your braces.

What do you mean be kind to your braces?

When we say be kind to you braces we are asking that you take cares of your orthodontic appliance so that your treatment process can go as planned.  Dr. Wentz has determined braces are the best corrective option for you so we want you to take care of your braces. Taking care of your braces and following treatment instructions will help your achieve the best final results.

Here's how to be kind to your braces:

Brush and flossing daily

lubbock bracesYou will notice that it is much harder to keep your teeth clean with braces. Food becomes caught in the brackets and between your teeth. Brushing after meals and flossing will help prevent plaque from forming and should become part of your daily schedule. We know that it can be a pain to floss around your braces, but flossing is the best way to prevent gum disease and other oral health problems. If you find flossing with braces difficult, don’t give up on it. There are tools that can help. Ask us about Floss Threaders. Floss Threaders definitely make flossing with braces much easier.

Avoid sticky or hard foods

Even though it may seem like the best foods are the foods that are sticky and/or hard, those foods can break a bracket or wire. An example of sticky food is laffy taffy and an example of hard food is hard shell taco. To see the full of foods to avoid click here.

Chew with the back of teeth

Taking a large bite of food with your front teeth can leave your braces vulnerable to damage. Cut large foods into pieces and use your back teeth to chew.

Wear your elastics

Elastics move the teeth in a direction they could not be moved using braces alone. Change the elastics routinely even if they are not broken. After a while, elastics lose their strength. Change them after each meal and before bedtime. If one elastic breaks, replace both sides.  Carry extra elastics with you at all times. If you don't have enough to last until your next appointment, please stop by our office and pick more up or call us and we can send more to you. We don't want you to run out

Be mindful of wires and brackets

Wentz OrthodonticsEvery day when you brush your teeth, check to make sure you do not have any loose braces by gently trying to slide each one. If a wire or band comes loose, do not be alarmed. If a tie wire is protruding and irritating, use a blunt instrument (the back of a spoon or a pencil eraser) to carefully push the wire out of the way. If you have a broken or loose appliance, please call us to determine if your breakage is urgent and requires immediate repair.

This summer we're giving out rewards for your kindness! Let us know about your act of kindness and you'll be entered to win cash prize up to $300! Enter in our office, tag us on social media using the hashtag ‪#‎wentzkindnesscontest‬ or email tamara@wentzmail.com. Contest ends August 28th, 2015.

Pick the Right Snacks

Sometimes getting kids and teens to eat healthy isn't an easy task, especially when they’re busy with school and other activities. And as parents we’re even busier. It’s OK to admit that sometimes it’s just easier to grab fast food on the way home from work or toss our kids a couple bucks to purchase lunch in the school cafeteria. But proper nutrition not only insures that our kids will grow into healthy adults, it also insures that the money we spent on their orthodontic care does not go to waste.

Did you know that a proper diet provides all the essential nutrients to bones and tissues undergoing change? So, the healthier you are the better the results of your orthodontic treatment.

Knowing this, here are 4 quick, tasty and nutritious snacks your kids are sure to love.

wentz orthodontics 1. Cheese: Cheese is one of the healthiest snacks for your child’s teeth. In addition to providing calcium, cheese also helps fight cavities. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Cheese stimulates the body’s salivary glands to clear the mouth of debris. This means cheese disrupts the development of cavities, especially when eaten as a snack or at the end of a meal. Also…the Calcium and phosphorous found in cheese prevents decreases in the plaque’s ph level and work to re-mineralize the enamel of your child’s teeth.

2. Whole Wheat Bread: Whole wheat bread gives kids their iron, vitamins, magnesium, and zinc. So instead of making a sandwich on white bread for lunch use Whole Wheat Bread instead. It’s a little change that will make a big impact.

texas braces 3. Oatmeal: Instead of high-sugar, high-fat options from the grocery store, try baking a batch of low-fat oatmeal cookies. Raisins, cranberries, dried apricots and nuts can be great additions to the cookie dough because of their nutritional value & taste.

4. Yogurt: Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Consider Yogurt as an alternative to ice-cream for dessert. When mixed with berries and granola…yogurt is a tasty treat.

The Fab 5 of Food Groups

What you eat not only affects your oral health, but you overall health as well. It is important to be conscious of the food you are consuming. So before you eat think about what should be on your plate.

Whether it’s a quick snack or a full course meal, you should be mindful of your food choices. By making the choice to be mindful of what you are eating you are making the decision to include foods in your diet that are good your overall health. Tooth decay, periodontal disease and other health issues can be prevented by having a well-balanced diet. If you wondering how you can make it simple to eat better, it’s easy. All starts with choosing the right foods. The best way to do this is by choosing foods from the five food groups known as the building blocks for healthy dieting. Those food groups are: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy.

What’s in each group?

Fruits:
Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed.
See the Fruit Group food gallery for examples.

Veggies:
Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed.

Grains:
Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products.

Protein: All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the Protein Foods Group. Beans and peas are also part of the Vegetable Group.
For more information on beans and peas, see Beans and Peas Are Unique Foods.

Dairy: All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Most Dairy Group choices should be See the Dairy Group food gallery for examples. fat-free or low-fat. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Calcium-fortified soymilk (soy beverage) is also part of the Dairy Group.

At Wentz Orthodontics we care about the health of all of our patients. In addition to your health, while under orthodontic treatment being mindful of what you eat also means eating foods that are safe for your orthodontic appliance. There are certain dietary habits that are known to cause breakage of orthodontic appliances. Our aim is to achieve the treatment goals with as few disturbances as possible due to appliance breakage, and to minimize the side effects of poor diet choices. Remember, teeth move best in a healthy environment and in individuals with excellent overall health. Be sure you have a well-balanced diet.

Shoes for Orphans Souls

“It's not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” -Mother Teresa

In an effort to help those who are most deserving we have teamed up with Buckner International, a Texas based non-profit, to provide shoes to children around the world. There are so many things you can do to help other and providing new shoes is just one way for us as a community to give back the blessings we have earned.

wentz

You may be wondering why shoes are the focus of this campaign, but whether you realize it or no not shoes are important to our day to day lives. Here are why shoes are so important to these recipients.

New shoes are important to health:
Buckner International serves many developing countries. In these countries children don’t have shoes so they must walk around barefoot. In many cases children are walking around barefoot in health hazardous environments, which put them at risk for illness. New shoes help protect children from potentially harmful diseases or injuries that can occur when walking with no shoes.
wentz
New shoes are important to education:
Many schools around the world require students wear shoes to attend, for children whose don’t have the luxury of having shoes this poses a threat to their education. Learn is important and everyone should have the opportunity to get an education.

New shoes are important to providing hope:
Children from disadvantaged families and children of orphanages typically share everything including shoes. A new pair of shoes means a lot to these children, it is something of their own which can make a child feel extra special.

Buckner International asks specifically for shoes for the simple fact that is vital to provide children who have so little with durable shoes in their best condition. These children deserve so much this is just a little gesture to show that there are people in the world who care.

We are proud to say that until April 30th, 2015 we will be an office dropout station for the Shoes for Orphans Souls Campaign. The Power of Music

Music can be found everywhere, from your car radio to the melodies made by the sounds of nature. But did you know there are benefits associated with hearing your favorite tunes.

Can you still remember your favorite childhood songs? Years can past by yet once you hear the beat of your favorite song you can instantly remember the words. This is one of the effects of music. Many researchers have confirmed the positive effects music can have on your overall health and day to day lives.

Here are 3 Positive Affects of Music:(source: Huffington Post)

Music can reduce stress- In stressful situation music can help calm nerves. For example, many people feel anxiety while visiting dentist or orthodontist but listening to music during treatment can you relax. "Research has shown that listening to music -- at least music with a slow tempo and low pitch, without lyrics or loud instrumentation -- can calm people down, even during highly stressful or painful events."

Music helps aid in memorization- Many people just music to stimulate memory. For instance students often play music while studying. "Music enjoyment elicits dopamine release, and dopamine release has been tied to motivation, which in turn is implicated in learning and memory."

Music gives you an energy boost for physical activity- According to sports researchers Peter Terry and Costas Karageorghis, “Music has the capacity to capture attention, lift spirits, generate emotion, change or regulate mood, evoke memories, increase work output, reduce inhibitions and encourage rhythmic movement -- all of which have potential applications in sport and exercise.”

Knowing what positive affects music can have on the mind and body, we want to give you a chance to reap the benefits live! Enter to win 4 tickets to see country music star Brad Paisey live in concert Saturday, March 7th.

How Old is Your Toothbrush?

The toothbrush is your number one oral hygiene accessory.  Toothbrushes help keep your teeth and mouth clean, but how long should you a keep a toothbrush?

It is recommended that ever 3 to 4 months you switch out that old toothbrush for a new fresh one. Replacing your toothbrush is essential since they are constantly being exposed to germs and bacteria. If you notice the bristles of your tooth brush have become worn out that is a sign that you need a new toothbrush. Those of you who wear braces should change their toothbrushes frequently because braces break down and fracture bristles and the toothbrushes lose their effectiveness.

3 Reasons to Change Out Your Old Toothbrush:

1. Bacteria - Your toothbrush is a tool for removing bacteria from your teeth, but it doesn’t actually kill bacteria. Some of the bacteria from your teeth stay on your toothbrush after you are done brushing.

2. Bristles - Like any tool, a toothbrush wears down. Worn bristles are tough on your enamel and can wear it away over time. Not only that… an old, worn toothbrush can be up to 95 percent less effective at removing plaque.

3. Illness - Always change your toothbrush after you’ve been sick, even if it’s not “technically” time to switch out your toothbrush. The germs and bacteria your toothbrush has been exposed to can be harmful to your health once your feeling better.

Having a toothbrush that is in good shapes means good oral hygiene. It is helpful to keep a pack of toothbrushes available in your household at all times for easy replacement. So mark those calendars for every 3 to 4 months and it’s out with the old and in with the new.

It's National Children's Dental Health Month!

February is National Children's Health Month!

National Children’s Dental Health Month is sponsored by the ADA (American Dental Association) which promotes creating lifelong healthy habits starting at an early age. Developing good habits early will more likely lead to that child being able to look forward to a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. It is very important that parents know that a balanced diet, limiting snacks, brushing and flossing are key to healthy teeth and avoiding cavities. Along with healthy habits, regular dental appointments will help you keep your child on track.

This year's NCDHM campaign slogan "Defeat Monster Mouth" is displayed on the eye-catching children's posters that feature the McGrinn Twins, Flossy and Buck, along with their best friends and next-door neighbors, Den and Gen Smiley and K-9 the dog.  They are fighting to defeat Plaqster the Monster for good oral health.

For more information about National Children’s Dental Health Month please visit Ada.org.

Remember, 7 is the perfect age for an evaluation. 7 years old may sound too early to be thinking about orthodontic treatment, but it proven that early treatment is important for ensuring positive treatment results. 7 isn’t just a number Dr. Wentz came up with, it is the age recommended by the American Association of Orthodontist.

An early examination does not mean immediate treatment is necessary. After your initial examination we may just need to monitor your child periodically to see how teeth and jaw continue to develop. If your child is not ready for treatment he/she will entered into the Wentz Thumbs Up Club. The Wentz Thumbs Up Club provides a way for our office to communicate with each patient’s family about everything going on in our office.

Have any questions about early intervention or want to bring your child in for a consultation? Give us a call today.

National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) began as a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 3, 1941. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single day observance became a week-long event in 1955. In 1981, the program was extended to a month-long observance known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month. Since 1941, the observance has grown from a two-city event into a nationwide program. NCDHM messages reach thousands of people in communities across the country and at numerous armed services bases. Local observances often include displays of posters provided by the ADA, coloring and essay contests, health fairs, free dental screenings, museum exhibits, classroom presentations by dentists and other members of the dental team, and dental office tours.

Floss Like a Boss

You eat the right foods, brush your teeth twice a day and make your regularly scheduled dental appointments so you're good right? WRONG. Your're missing a key component to have a healthy mouth, FLOSSING!

Flossing is important to your oral care routine, in fact the American Dental Association suggest that you floss at least once a day. Flossing and brushing your teeth go hand in hand. Flossing helps you reach areas in your mouth and between teeth that a toothbrush can't get to. Flossing regularly also helps remove plaque, prevents gum disease, prevents cavities from forming.

Flossing with Braces:

It may be a little more work to floss with braces, but it just take a little extra time and technique.

The first step to flossing is getting the floss under the wire that connects the braces together. A floss threader will help you get the dental floss underneath your archwires. Dental floss with a stiff end is also available. It is pre-cut and is very easy to insert underneath archwires.

Once the floss is under the archwire it can be wrapped around the tooth on one side. The floss is then pushed up toward the gum line and then pulled down toward the wire. This should be repeated four to five times to ensure all plaque is removed. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the wire as you pull down. Then wrap the floss around the neighboring tooth. Once both teeth are done, the floss is pulled out and the process repeated for the next two teeth.

While under orthodontic treatment you should be flossing after every meal. It's easy for food to caught between wires and it is important that you clean it out as soon as possible. Check out this video clip below which displays the proper way to floss.
